Practical 2 (Statistical Analysis)

Collect Data and Perform Statistical Analysis (0.5 hrs, August 18-19, 2010)

Criteria to be assessed (D, DCP, CE): none (introductory, formative practical)

Length:  0.5 hour (max)

Objective:

Students will collect some plant data of their choice.  (Suggestions include leaf length or width or leaf number; compared between shade and - full sun plants or between upper and lower branches)

Material:

paper, pencil, Ti84, computer (no probes)

Method:

1) Select data to be collected

• recommendations included:  comparing size of leaf near stem/trunk to size of leaf further from stem; o

• comparing leaves growing in sunlight to leaves growing under shade; etc.

2) Make rough data table in your lab book (show teacher) 

3) Collect your data

4) Make data table (in Excel)

5) Graph your data (in Excel)

6) Submit report as Word document in email attachment with file name:  C_prac2_studentname

• data table and associated graph
• use IB required format for tables and graph
• calculate standard deviation
• include error bars
• do a statistical test on your data (like a t-test)
