9.2.1 Outline how the root system provides a large surface area for mineral ion and water uptake by means of branching and root hairs. (2)
- Shallow roots provide anchorage and collect water run off or nutrients close to the soil surface.
- Maximise surface area for absorption.
- Dicot tap roots reach deeper into the soil to absorb water and mineral ions.
- There are root hairs within the roots extending to increase the surface area.
