Explain the factors that affect the distribution of animal species, including temperature, water, breeding sites, food supply, and territory.

Temperature

Temperature affects the distribution of animal species because animals such as ectotherms and endotherms utilize temperature for their metabolism. The ectotherms (cold-blooded animals), and endotherms (warm-blooded animals) rely on the external temperature for their metabolism because all animals are suited to live in a narrow range of temperatures.

Water

Water is used by animals as a habitat as well as for a transport medium because of its cohesive properties. Animals who live in water use water as a place to lay eggs and use their gills for oxygen in the water. In addition, water can be a source of food for a variety of animals that live underwater and a drinking source for animals that live on land. Water's cooling properties give animals a stable environment.

Breeding Sites

Places such as underneath rocks, caves, and dark protected areas give animals the ability to breed freely and safely. Given these abiotic environments, animals are safe from predators who prey on the eggs and given security from harsh conditions outside the breeding sites.

Food Supply

Plant distribution is crucial in the actual distribution of animals because plants are the producers. Food is seasonal source of energy for all sorts of animals, and some animals even store food during times of hibernation or simple for the nature of doing so.

Territory

Territory is the hierarchical structure of the population and it provides places such as breeding sites and food. On territories, animals compete for food source which affects the animal distribution greatly.
